Watched FATWS today with my school's Marvel club, which meant that I didn't need to shell out for D+. But I enjoyed it enough and might want to rewatch bits of it for fandom purposes that I might shell out for D+ after all.
Things I loved:
- Sam having a family and a backstory and complicated feelings about being back after 5 years!
- Bucky's life being exactly as sad and heartbreaking as fandom generally makes it out to be! (crying a thousand tears at Bucky having no friends, only professional relationships or people that he's trying to make amends to.) Also: sleeping on the floor in his living room -- wow, that's, like, sadder than the mattress in Romania
- Yes Sam -- turns out that the shield can't be idle -- if you won't pick it up, the government will find some rando who's WORSE
- I'm SO GLAD that they're actually exploring the ramifications of people returning from the Blip, and not just in a "wow, that guy's hit his growth spurt" way that Spiderman Far From Home did.
- Also interesting that now they have no funding and Sam's resorting to being a contractor for the air force?? Like, I get that Tony used to fund them, but... what's Pepper doing?
- Forever sad about Steve being fridged, so I'll just pretend that he de-serumed and is just chilling somewhere (or is somewhere in the multiverse). But SO HAPPY to see Sam and Bucky get fleshed out!

Date: 2021-03-21 03:46 am (UTC)yeah, the bank scene was ... kinda meh for me? It seems like such a standard "let's show how much life sucks for the main characters" sort of thing -- like the bank scene in the first Tobey Macguire Spiderman movie. Also, Sam had savings, Sam had a house in DC in TWS. I can maybe buy that those things haven't been unlocked since he returned from the dead, but still.

Date: 2021-03-22 05:48 pm (UTC)AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH there is a just a ton of worldbuilding that I know will not be done and I wish they'd just left out that five year gap thing because it sets up expectations that will not be met, at least not for me.

Date: 2021-03-21 03:01 pm (UTC)And I'm also loving that they've leaned into Bucky's life being hard as he tries to make amends and adjust to the modern world. His friendship with Yori is no doubt going to end badly, but it also gives Bucky some of his best moments in the episode.
Was of course infuriated by the government telling Sam he did the right thing picking up the shield so they could hand it off to some random white dude. (Watching with the hubby, his comment was "did they cast the guy who could most look like a smug a**hole?")
I'm also pretending Steve is chilling somewhere outside of time so I don't get angry that he's not there to help his friends. (Because otherwise, WTH Steve.)
It's not perfect, and there are moments when my brain just grinds it gears at the assumptions of the narrative (the bad guys are bad because they want a new world without borders and that's bad how????) but I'm so far very much enjoying it.

Date: 2021-03-27 04:28 pm (UTC)You know, I wonder if his friendship with Yori might give him a chance at absolution -- like, Bucky really needs someone to forgive him for one of his acts as the Winter Soldier, and Yori seems like a possibility. Or at least Bucky might get to a point where he's strong enough in accepting himself that he tells Yori the truth.
