potofsoupI finished the Untamed Monday night!
It ended up better than I expected, although I do wish it were shorter. Maybe 25 episodes instead of 50.
Me at episode 15: egh, these boring tropes
Me at episode 18: ah, *there's* the more interesting tropes
Me at episode 28: sure, let's see where this goes
Me at episode 46: this is not bad
I definitely like that the story follows through on Jin Guangyao as a foil for Wei Wuxian, in showcasing the way they relate to societal approval vs. the love and support of one or two people. Jin decides to only care about the people who are kind to him, and believes that his right to love/succeed allows him to kill/harm anyone who stands in the way. On the other hand, Wei keeps caring about people who haven't been kind, and is less willing to kill/harm others. Is it because Wei is a more selfless/upright person? Or is it because he received more love and acceptance as a child? Or is it that they both develop a desire to please others, and it just so happened that the "other" happened to be a surly brother in one case and an asshole father in the other case?
I liked the whole bit about what makes society willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Still wish there was a fucking government apparatus, though.
I also have a soft spot for Wen Zhuliu! I appreciated the little nods to his silent decisions. Loyal and bound by a sense of honor, but also willing to look the other way as his concession to the fact that the people he feels bound to serve are themselves bad eggs.
Anyways, still wish there were more ways for women to be awesome (turned out that Mianmian and Jiang Yanli did have spines, but I wanted, like, one woman to actually be good at fighting), but happy for all the gayness. I've been thinking about naming the flute 陈情 and how it's WWX expressing his love for Jiang Cheng (after all, he got into this mess because of his self sacrifice for Jiang Cheng), but also Lan Zhan (since he stole the music idea from him.)
Do I suddenly want to draw pics of these dudes? Not really. Was it a decent show to watch while drawing? Sure.
