Yay! As of an hour ago, I finally submitted all of my grades and comments! Writing 250 words per student was the usual drudgery, but I like giving advice, so I've structured it so that the majority of my narrative is giving advice. But anyway, I'm done!!!!! This means that I'm now going into summer mode, where I'll have more than 2 hours per week to devote to fandom and creative projects!
This year, thanks to COVID, Miss Rutabaga is home with us instead of being in preschool, so instead of having 9am-5pm free to frolic, it's more like 1pm-4pm (which is thanks to the awesomeness of my hardworking Hoosband). But anyway, it really feels like coming out of creative hibernation. Here's what's on the docket so far:
- attempt to make a cardboard armchair for myself, complete with cushions made of foam mailers
- do all my Fandom Trumps Hate stuff (no, I have not forgotten!)
- do some lesson planning and set some school-wide protocols for Chinese School for maintaining all remote teaching come September
- July 4th Steve comic, which, as a policy, I don't start until after June 26
- Comics anthology work for our local comics group (and also plan some outdoors socials!)
- Work with Hoosband on our Doctor Who 2-player ttrpg (I really want it to be a thing we can do together!)
- Finish Rutabaga comics, finish Tisquantum
- Do prep for 2020 school year, which will be.... interesting. We might be teaching classes where half the students are on zoom and the other half are in the classroom.
As far as COVID is concerned, for the summer my plan is to keep my social circles and interactions small so that I can keep interacting with my parents. (So: groceries, takeout, outdoors socially-distant and mask-wearing interactions with <10 people). Once school starts again on Aug 17, I'll have to re-enroll Miss Rutabaga in preschool, at which point .... I guess I won't be seeing my parents in physical space for a while???

I haven't been closely following the current stuff going on re: AO3, but thank you to everyone on my friends page who has linked to helpful information. I'm hoping that AO3 will respond and take definitive action! Two half-baked and unwarranted thoughts:
- I'm one of those people for whom there is a big difference on whether a Harmful Thing is presented positively or negatively in fic. (As in, a fic that presents rape as a horrible thing, and the rapist gets their comeuppance and/or the system of oppression gets overturned is A+ in my world, whereas a fic that presents rape as just the way things are, or a totally okay act, is horrifying. (I'm using rape here as an example, but also replace with racist tropes, misogyny, etc.) Anyway, I know that for some people, the mere depiction of Harmful Thing is harmful, regardless of whether it's portrayed positively or negatively, but I think it'd be rather nice, since hopefully AO3 will be overhauling its warnings system, to add in that sort of nuance. There are already tag conventions such as "period-typical homophobia" or "canon-typical violence", but maybe also "racism portrayed as a negative" would be nice.
- It has been helpful for me to think of potential changes as falling into either the category of preventative changes that make the overall environment feel safer, versus tools for handling bad actors. So elevating Racism to be part of the top level warnings is part of the environmental change, as is creating more diverse fics and encouraging a culture of listening and changing. On the other hand, having better redress when abuse is reported, allowing for banning and mass settings on comment moderation, etc, would be specifically for handling bad actors.
Anyways, I haven't been keeping a close eye on this, so I'm sure these points have been brought up already, so if anyone can point me to where this is discussed, it'd be much appreciated.
