[Moana] -- The one where the Ocean keeps trying to find someone to take the heart of Te Fiti, and all the iterations it takes before the Ocean figures out the correct amount of intervention. (The first person, the Ocean intervenes not-at-all and that person drowns within the first day across the reef. The second person, the Ocean directly takes their boat to where Te Fiti should be but they were not ready for Te Ka. The third person makes it a few more days, with the ocean bringing them gentle currents, but with no one to teach them to sail and a non-sea-worthy boat, it still fails.) So on and so forth until eventually the Ocean figures it out. Maybe one of the people is Moana's dad -- the Ocean thought, maybe two people would make it better, but then ... Maybe it hatches the idea of Maui while chatting with Gramma, with Gramma saying "If only I were 30 years younger, I would take the boat..."
[Finding Nemo] -- The one where Peach and Gil have late night conversations in the Tank, with Peach asking Gil about what the ocean tastes like, and Gil asking Peach to read him things from around the dentist office. (Peach learned to read with her previous owner, who would sit in front of the tank reading books.) They plan and daydream in low voices, and Peach falls asleep dreaming about the ocean. (She doesn't know that there are no books in the ocean)
[Monsters Inc] -- The one where Celia is running her own op and it keeps getting foiled by Mike and Sully.
[Bambi] -- The one about the Squirrel and the Chipmunk being totally gay and living in domestic bliss. Flower sees them and is envious of how open they are, but he goes home and ma and pa Skunk frowns and he knows he has to find a good female Skunk to marry.
[Lion King] -- The one where Sarabi mourns the death of her husband and child, and learns to carry on. AU where she is the one who overthrows Scar and becomes the ruler of Pride Rock. (Perhaps still acting behind some non-existent male figurehead).
[Cars] -- the one where it doesn't exist as a movie. Or at least one where cars don't have gender.

Date: 2019-06-23 06:22 pm (UTC)Yeah, I have so many problems with Lion King. Like... if lions can survive on bugs, what's to stop Simba from just bringing all the lions into the jungle? Also -- does Pride Rock's economy/ecosystem only work through the oppression of the Hyenas? How does Simba's roar magically restore the balance of the ecosystem/economy? And like, the relative animal aging thing is always an issue. When I watch Moana, I'm like "so... that's probably the 12th baby pig that Moana's called 'Pua', right?"

Her parents are only willing to indulge her so far when it comes to her pets.

Date: 2019-06-25 01:34 am (UTC)It rings true that the Ocean was being very judicious about when and where it helped. Ultimately the problem was a spiritual one, and to solve it, Moana needed to take her own spiritual journey, which the Ocean could facilitate but not force.

Date: 2019-06-25 04:50 am (UTC)Yeah! I've definitely thought a lot about what the Ocean can and can't do (the Ocean is too low to see the spiral on Te Ka's chest, and the Ocean can't reach Lalotai), and also what the Ocean chooses to do and not do. (The Ocean doesn't help Moana get past the Te Ka barrier rocks).
Honestly, I would totally write this fic if I weren't worried about stomping all over Polynesian mythology.
