Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I've been watching a lot of Moana recently due to toddler Rutabaga, and one thing I love about it, is that it shows Moana failing at the beginning -- she decides to go out to sea and immediately gets rolled under by the waves, and survives due to some quick thinking. And that experience has a clear impact on her -- when she discovers the giant cavern of boats, her first thought was to go to her father. And the movie makes clear what makes her succeed later: first, she got an actual sea-worthy vessel, and not a boat designed for fishing within the reef. She packed for a long trip. And even then, the ocean had to help her get to Maui. It wasn't all the ocean's doing, however -- Maui didn't really agree to teach her to wayfind until after she helped Maui get out of Tamatoa's cave. You don't succeed because you're the "chosen" one, or because you really want it. It's about being prepared, it's about persisting, and it's about learning from your experience and trying again.

(omg I have so many thoughts about Moana, guyz. I should write more about it).

Oh, in case you were here to read about my thoughts about Cap stuff... I really love the moment in Cap3 where Bucky says "I remember everything." He remembers everything and therefore the running away, the passivity, the guilt and feelings of culpability. He wants to live a quiet life but he can't, because he remembers all the moments where his body and mind were not his own and knows that as long as the words are out there, he can turn into that. It dovetails so well with the thing that SebStan said about how the WS' memories are "all over the place" -- floating about without context to lock them down. And now, "I remember everything." How does a man who remembers everything keep going? Why does he run when Tony comes seeking vengeance? I drew/wrote so many fixits for the version of Bucky in Cap3, guyz. I think it seriously took me a year before I was okay with it.

Ahhh I love Moana so, so much. I've only seen it twice, which really feels like an "only" statement because it deserves to be seen so much more. The fact that Moana really has to fight to make her way through her journey and save everyone (and even having her chosen status questioned, discarded, then reclaimed by her deciding to take charge) just... really sends such a great message about not waiting around and not needing to be specially chosen just to do something great. Seeing her doubt herself and her worthiness before asserting that she can and will complete the task she set out to do... it's just? Super motivational. The stars don't have to be aligned for you to move mountains. You just need to believe in your ability, work hard to overcome your hurdles, and just do it!!!

Ugh, I love Moana.

I don't even like Disney (sorry), but I decided to watch Moana and I was thrilled. Good story, good music, gorgeous visuals. A coming of age story without unnecessary, premature romance. Just wonderful.

I remember coming across an interview with SebStan in which he said that "I remember everything" is, basically, a lie. He's telling Tony what he thinks Tony wants or needs to hear, but in fact, he doesn't remember everything--and, to expand on what Seb said, that probably leads to no less guilt than if he remembered every mission in crystal-clear recall.

(I need more Steve and Bucky icons.)

I got Moana out of the library on dvd at long last, just recently, and loved it! I am not one to leap to go to or watch any disney movie, since when I was younger the trend was for them to ruin things I had loved as a child. But it's nice to see something like this, where they involved a LOT of pacific island people, from various cultures, in all aspects of the story and art and so on.

I love Moana's bildungsroman quality, and that we actually see the process of her learning and getting better at things in more than a montage-song!

I only saw Mauna recenty, when a coworker told me that her family pretty much sings "You're Welcome" anytime they feel like giving a snide, passive-aggressive response - because it usually makes their kid laugh instead of sulk. And after seeing it, I just wished I'd been a kid when this came out - that shit's funny. :)

It's possible coworker and I both have issues, but at least we can point them out to each other and then sing, so you know that's good.

I have heard so much good stuff about Moana! I really need to watch it.

Bucky Barnes breaks my heart! He deserves all the fix-its.
