This year's creative endeavors

I woke up in the middle of the night with the feeling that ... I think I'm finally okay with losing my tumblr. Made my peace with it, somehow. That might have been 3am brain talking, but I'm going to embrace it and move on. I'm doing my usual Year-in-Review and New Year's Resolutions over on my personal blog at
summercomfort, but figured I should do a "stuff I made" accounting here.
Original work:
The Rutabaga Project: 12 pages, spread across 8 comics. Plus I put together book #2. It's not a lot, but it's something. (Since the tumblr account deletion, I've just now created
therutabagaproject, and also an AO3 series here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1234598 . I still have to post all the pre-2018 stuff, but at least there's now a new home for those things.)
Golden: I drew the Yick Wo comic, which was 6 pages. Plus doing all the layout work. I'm really proud of my cover design for Yick Wo! :)
Tisquantum: I figured out a way to finish it without being horribly appropriative, and I re-opened the doc with the script, which is ... something.
Total: 18 comic pages
Fandom stuff:
I had 4 arts in the RBB and got 5 fic claims! And for most of the fics, I did additional art! Total of 1 comic page, and 30 pics. (Plus 4 pics from the other 2 fics that I illustrated for...)
I drew Bambi (1 pg), the Shuri comic (8 pgs), the Bucky birthday comic (4 pgs) and the 2 Steve birthday comics (5 pgs each). I think there is some other miscellany, like fanart of fics, but those are the big ones. Oh, and the one where Bucky asks T'Challa for guns (2 pgs).
Plus there's the Personal Fan Project where I did all of the layout design, and drew probably 20 pics?
I think I also wrote 35,000 words across 3 fics (20k + 5k +10k) though this is the most you'll ever see me acknowledge those, lol
Total: 24 comic pages + 55 pics + 35,000 words
Definitely not like 2014 and 2015 when I was drawing 3 pages a week and clocking in ~150 pages in a year, but ... at least I'm still arting.
---------------
Overall, I think I'm the happiest with my 2 Wakanda comics (the one about Shuri's grief and Bucky's birthday). They conveyed the sense of loss and mourning that I was aiming for. I'm also kind of stunned by the fact that I managed to write a fic that was not only >5k, but actually 20k. Writing is hard!
In terms of sheer popularity, it's probably a tie between Shuri's Grief and the non-IW-compliant Steve birthday comic. (Conversely, the IW-compliant one where Steve and Tony make up is the least popular of all my birthday comics, even less than the Civil War fixit one)
I'm proudest of my Yick Wo comic. It's a proof of concept for a series that I want to do, of short anecdotes that talk about the intersection of institutional racism and immigration in the US. I'm hoping to find time to work on more tidbits next year! I also had a nice ~2 week chunk in the end of June where I was working on 3 different comic/art projects* that all involved me researching war and immigration law, which was Super Fun. More of that for next year, definitely!
I think my creative goals for next year is to draw more comics and less pics! :)

Really? Huh. I wonder why that is?

Date: 2019-01-02 06:34 pm (UTC)I think RL politics had gotten to a point where people wanted something about that instead? Maybe because by then most of the IW screaming had finished? ::shrug::

Date: 2019-01-02 06:45 pm (UTC)Personally, I liked the way your comic acknowledged the horrors of what had happened as well as the hurt all of it caused. And yet it's hopeful in a way that makes sense both for the canon and what happened in the actual comic. <3

Date: 2019-01-02 08:19 pm (UTC)uwu thanks so much! Yeah, I really want Steve and Tony to be OKAY, and also for everyone to take a moment to process the loss. I'm glad that came across! <3 <3 <3
