Another thought on Reblogs

Not all posts are intended to be reblogged, but if you do have something that you want to spread, like announcing a new comm or something, maybe one thing to do is to create a <textarea> where you put in the code that people can simply copy-paste into their post. They can add/edit the text how they want, but saves on formatting time.

If they want to continue the reblog chain, they can simply paste the reblog snippet a second time and put it inside a <textarea> </textarea>.

Reblog starter text:
<user name="potofsoup"> had <a href="https://potofsoup.dreamwidth.org/9316.html">an idea</a> about spreading reblogs via [textarea] tags to save time on formatting.

yeah, it's not the most elegant way. Mostly came out of me being like "huh, I spend a lot of time doing the user name formatting of my "reblog" posts...

It seems like you need to do a lot of escaping angle brackets to do this (and there's possibly some escaping missing - once I copied "about spreading reblogs via textarea tags to save time on formatting." from the textarea, the word "textarea" had angle brackets around it unescaped. I removed the in my repost and this comment so they wouldn't cause a problem, the other option being to escape them myself.)

I wonder if using markdown instead would reduce this issue.

Oh! I see the problem -- I've fixed the bit so that it should work now.

That said, I think that's a problem specific to spreading this particular post, since the content of the post is about using the <textarea> tag. Whereas other reblog posts would just have normal user and link tags. I've moved this idea to the bottom of this post, and I think the "reblog snippet" at the bottom there doesn't have the same problem.

I hadn't realised you don't need to escape all the angle brackets in the text area, e.g. around the "a" and "user" tags. Yeah that's not a big deal then

Yeah! The whole deal with the textarea is that it treats everything inside it as non-code text .... except for the textarea tag, ahahaha

That almost worked, but you can't see the end tag for the text area at the end. Anyway there should be a textarea end tag at the end.

I made some changes though, so that the reblog could include the whole post (except hash tags) and a response.

The textarea start tag seems to work (as non-code) inside it, the problem is the matching textarea end tag doesn't work.

Yeah, it's the textarea business. Believe me -- I thought a fair bit about this. The best I could figure out is to ask the reblogger to paste the text in twice, once normally, and once inside a textarea

I wonder if you could do something like having a javascript bookmarklet to duplicate selected text and put the extra copy in textarea tags.

I think bookmarklets are beyond what I'm willing to do to jury-rig a reblogging experience. Especially since I feel like DW favors the personal touch, so instead of 100 copies of the same image, it's more a place where people "reblog" by sharing links.
