I have a Steve plushie that I bought back at ACen 2014, and after Rutabaga was born, it's been one of the many toys in her toy collection. Earlier this week, she found it again and was like "Steve! Mommy, you like Steve, right?" And I'm like "Yes I do! How do you know?" and she's like "You have so many pictures of Steve on the wall." And I'm like ^^;;; (I've been trying not to pressure her into my fandom, but I guess she still figured out that it's a Thing I Like.)

Anyway, I was like: !!! "I drew a book of little picture stories about Steve, do you want to see?" And then we sat and read my Stucky fanzine. And now she's really into Steve, especially the fact that when he was little he was colorblind but wanted to be an artist. The crux of the story comes across pretty well -- that him and Bucky were good friends, that Bucky fell and Steve thought he died, but in fact bad people turned Bucky into part-robot and made him forget Steve. But then when he saw Steve again, he remembered Steve and rescued him from a river.

For the last 3 nights she demanded that we read the fanzine as her bedtime story. She's decided that Steve's favorite color is pink, and today she told me that she likes having Steve around because she doesn't feel as lonely when she falls asleep.

It's been both gratifying and extremely embarrassing that my fan comics are her first encounter with Steve Rogers -- it was a pretty magical moment to be able to just duck into the other room and pull the book from my bookshelf and then sit and read it with her. But also now that I've been forced to read it twice, I'm like "oh, here are all the things wrong with it that I should fix/re-arrange/redraw." So... a reprint might be happening this summer... (if Rutabaga can go back to daycare in the summer... haaaaaah)

This is so sweet, loved your description of the story. And very cool that you get to share the things you love w/ Rutabega! :)

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

I love being fannish with my formerly-small roommates. Star Wars is the second household religion, and it's really fun watching E and her parents watching Steven Universe together.

PS let me know if I can write a story or 2 for her. I have some children's books to use as a gauge.

That is so awesome! It's adorable that her first encounter with Steve is the plushie you bought and your fanzine.

I've tried multiple times to get the kidlet interested in Steve and Marvel and it's never taken. The closest I came was when she wandered through the living room when I was watching TFA and sat rapt through the whole Man with a Plan musical number. But as soon as it flipped back to the war and fighting she was gone like a shot. Now it's all eyerolls when i'm reading/watching Marvel. (Ah, the joys of a teenager.)

The past year or so I've tried to avoid being openly enthusiastic about anything I think the kidlet might like in fear of inducing the dreaded "if Mom likes it, it must suck" reaction. That said, she's introduced us to Bob's Burgers which me and her dad now think it hi-larious. (She probably regrets this.)

If the Rutabaga is enjoying the characters and their relationships of your zine, she will definitely be disappointed by canon. Also, I really need to rewatch Spiderverse.
