Layers, Next, Zoom Stream?
Jul. 4th, 2020 11:55 pmHuzzah! I finished the July 4th comic this morning! (It's here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/1968099/chapters/60728896 )
After I finish inking, it usually only takes me 1-2 hours to slap on some colors and upload the images, but this year, I foolishly decided to set the whole thing at night, and so it ended up taking 6 hours and a bajillion extra layers.
Standard final layers for July 4th comics are usually:
- speech bubbles and panel frames
- inks
- colors
(because the focus is more on the words, the images get away with more slapdash rendering -- just enough to get the idea across)
Last night I finished my inks at 11pm and was like "okay, I should be done at 1am or so." Then last night at 1:30am I was like "oh noes." Because it was set at night, it meant that each panel was fully colored, which meant the layers were now:
- speech bubbles and panel frames
- white for the speech bubbles and panel gutters
- inks
- layer for sky images
- purple multiply layer for picking out the highlights
- blue multiply layer for night color
- colors
I was working with more than double the number of layers -- no wonder it took so long!
Anyway, now that this is done, and I've also spent the week wrapping up my Chinese School stuff for the summer, I'm ready for July!
Next up:
- there's 2 fan comics that I want to draw
- I want to update my Patreon (finally) with some recent process stuff from the past months
- inking of Rutabaga comics
Also! I have this idea of doing a Tuesday Night Zoom Stream/Hangouts thing. Basic idea is that I'd go on Zoom and do a share screen on my drawing tablet between, say, 8-10pm PDT. Interested folks can drop into the Zoom Room during that time (I'm thinking ... voice only? unless folks want to show off something?) Then we'd chat about whatever. Or you can listen to me hum subconsciously as I draw stuff. Or I guess I can play a TV show in the bg? Anyway, I've always wanted to try streaming, but a major hurdle for me is the fact that the communication is through text chat, which is like, "wait, you want me to stop drawing and read the chat and type responses?" Whereas drawing on a tablet and having a conversation is Totally Doable. (Or amicable silence....?) Anyway, if you're interested in trying this out with me next Tuesday 8-10pm PDT, leave me a comment and I'll send you the Zoom info?!!!
