::nodnod:: yeah, I definitely grew up thinking that, and it's a hard thing to unpack, and language definitely has value in lots of ways. But I also learned about Chinese art and Confucianism while in college. Did my understanding of Chinese help with that? sure. But also not more than anyone who's willing to pick up a smidgeon of a foreign language. I mean, it still makes me happy when I get to just pick up and read Han dynasty texts (weird flex that it is), but another teacher can do the same for the Quran, and he learned Arabic as a second language. So like, I feel like language gives a lot of access to culture, but it's not a 1:1 relationship.
